Maurice C. Woods was born October 29, 1931, in the small town of Harrodsburg, KY. Raised on a tobacco farm, Maurice quickly learned the importance of hard work and determination. At the age of 17, Maurice left his humble hometown to study accounting in Louisville, KY. Although he thought accounting was going to be his lifelong career, it only took one step into a Louisville accounting office to realize he was mistaken. No way was a man who only really knew the fields of Kentucky going to be comfortable in the confines of a cubicle.
Maurice spent the next couple of years working various jobs. However, his career and his life would soon find him. After finishing an apprenticeship as a pressman, he knew the printing industry was where he belonged. He also met the love of his life, Emma Lou (Kelsay) Woods, and the two married in 1950. Shortly thereafter they gave birth to their only daughter, Sharon, and his path was set.
In 1962, Maurice was offered an opportunity to be a foreman for Shamrock Printing in Holland, IN. Maurice and his family loaded up their belongings and made the move. It was here that Maurice was truly able to hone his management skills and come to the realization he needed to start his own printing company. Although not an easy decision, and many future sacrifices would have to be made, in September of 1971 Maurice opened the doors of Woods Printing Company.
Although Maurice loved putting ink on paper, printing did not define who he truly was. Maurice C. Woods loved his family, loved his church, and loved his community. He was not only a businessman but a leader, philanthropist, jokester, and friend. He knew the importance of caring and compassion and brought those qualities to everyone around him.
